UV Safe Tan
UV index and sunburn timer for iPhone and iPad

Enjoy the sun.
Skip the burn.

UV Safe Tan shows the live UV index where you are and counts down the minutes until your skin would burn, set by your skin type and SPF. It tells you when to reapply, and when to head for shade.

Your burn time, not a generic warning.

A UV number alone does not tell you how long you can stay out. UV Safe Tan turns it into minutes for your skin, follows the forecast as the sun moves, and keeps the countdown on your Lock Screen.

How it works

Set up once, protected all summer

  1. Pick your skin type

Choose from six skin types, from very fair to deep, and the SPF you wear. Turn on sand or water at the beach for the extra reflected UV.

  2. See your minutes

The live UV index for where you are becomes a burn time for your skin, worked out against the hourly forecast.

  3. Start the timer

Protect or Tan. The countdown lives on your Lock Screen and reminds you to reapply every 2 hours and when to get out of the sun.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What does the UV index number actually mean?

It measures how strong the sun's skin-burning ultraviolet rays are at a place and time. Each step up the scale means stronger UV and a faster burn. Protection is recommended from UV 3. Learn more

How long can I stay in the sun before I burn?

It depends on your skin type and the UV index. At UV 8, very fair skin can start to burn in about 17 minutes without sunscreen, while olive skin may take around 38 minutes. SPF stretches that time, but less than the label suggests. Learn more

How often should I reapply sunscreen?

At least every 2 hours when you are outdoors, and straight away after swimming, heavy sweating or towelling off, even if the bottle says water resistant. Learn more

How can I tan without burning?

Keep sessions short, avoid the midday peak, wear sunscreen, and stop well before your burn point. A tan builds over several short sessions, not one long one. No tan is fully safe, so treat any sun time as a limit. Learn more

What is my Fitzpatrick skin type?

It is a scale from I to VI based on how your skin reacts to sun. Type I always burns and never tans, type VI almost never burns. Think about how your untanned skin reacts to the first strong sun of summer. Learn more

What UV index is best for tanning?

A moderate index of about 3 to 5 is enough to tan while giving you more time before a burn. At 8 or higher, very fair skin can burn in under 20 minutes, so the margin for error is tiny. Learn more

How much does UV Safe Tan cost?

UV Safe Tan is free to download. Full access needs UV Safe Tan Pro, a subscription at $4.99 per week or $29.99 per year in the US, managed through your Apple Account. Read the terms

Does UV Safe Tan work on iPad?

Yes. UV Safe Tan runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or later, with widgets for the Home Screen and Lock Screen. Visit support

What does UV Safe Tan do with my location?

It uses your location only to fetch the UV forecast for where you are. There is no account, no ads and no tracking, and your sun profile and history stay on your device. Read the privacy policy
