How Long Does It Take to Get Sunburned? Times by UV Index and Skin Type

Updated 21 September 2026

Short answer: at a high UV index of 8, unprotected very fair skin (type I) can start to burn in about 17 minutes, fair skin (type II) in about 21, and olive skin (type IV) in about 38. Burn time halves every time the UV index doubles. Sunburn often shows up 4 to 6 hours after the damage, so do not wait to see redness before getting out of the sun.

How much longer does sunscreen give you?

SPF 30 in a lab means 30 times the dose to burn. In real life most people apply roughly half the tested amount of 2 mg per square centimetre, which cuts protection sharply. A realistic rule of thumb is to credit about half the number on the bottle, and to reapply every 2 hours regardless. See how often to reapply sunscreen.

Why a fixed number is never quite right

UV rises through the morning, peaks around solar noon and falls through the afternoon. Ten minutes at 1 PM is a far bigger dose than ten minutes at 5 PM. The honest way to estimate burn time is to add up the dose minute by minute against the forecast, which is hard to do in your head on a beach.

Letting UV Safe Tan do the maths

UV Safe Tan does exactly that. Pick your skin type and SPF, turn on the sand or water option at the beach, and it integrates the hourly UV forecast to give you a live countdown. Start the timer and it stretches automatically as the sun drops, with a Live Activity on your Lock Screen so you can see the time left without unlocking.
